(4-2-20) AFRICA: Kenya Releases 4,800 Prisoners, Hires 5,000 Health Workers—

(CNN) Kenya is decongesting its prisons to prevent overcrowding as a way to curtail the spread of coronavirus in the country. In the past month, the East African country has released 4800 prisoners in different parts of the country, according to Anne Amadi, the chief registrar of the judiciary in Kenya.

Kenya is set to hire 6,000 health workers to help fight the coronavirus outbreak, according to Health Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.

Of these, 5,000 will be deployed to counties, and 1,000 will remain at the national hospitals, Kagwe said at a media briefing on Thursday. “We hope to complete” the hiring “by Wednesday next week,” Kagwe said.
